Solusoap, a Carbon-Minimal Hand Soap

Product Plug

TLDR @ the end.

We'd been using Restore Naturals bulk liquid hand soap from Seward Co-op. We liked getting it in bulk, and liked the biodegradable ingredients. I suspected we weren't coming out much ahead on costs compared to aquiring it in 64oz refills, and there were drawbacks getting it from the co-op, lugging it downstairs, decanting it as needed, how much plastic waste was created. Also, I've learned over time that a major driver of carbon creating is shipping weight, and there's a lot of water weight involved.

A10 sachet container of Solusoap

In the interest of cost savings, simple ingredients, and carbon cutting, we tried a small sampling of hand soap concentrate and powders. We've landed on Solusoap in a big way. The ten pack in particular uses an extremely small amount of nonrecoverable material, and shipping weight is 1.5 ounces for what becomes 100 ounces with your tap water.

I don't know if I've seen a soap with fewer ingredients, and I like that. There might be better alternatives in terms of ingredients. More gentle to your skin and to the ecosystem. But the cost on this is really good, and it involves shipping no water weight.

The only place I've been able to find Solusoap is on Amazon, which I'm really displeased with. I've reached out to the manufacturer for details regarding other sources.

I'd love to hear from folks on their preferred products in this and area and the like.

Ingredients

  • SODIUM LAURYL SULFATE, a sulfate, synthetically produced from palm or coconut oil. This appears to be a (somewhat?) more gentle alternative to Sodium Laureth Sulfate. The only info I could find about is downsides are that it can strip oils, but compared to other alternatives, I don't know. It's manufacture is sometimes described as harmful to the ecosystem, but I don't know if that's because it is sourced from palm, or because it creates nasty waste, etc.
  • SODIUM CHLORIDE, table salt
  • SODIUM CITRATE, sodium salt of citric acid, used here to make the solution more alkaline
  • EDETATE DISODIUM, a preservative
  • WATER

TLDR

Solusoap is an affordable, minimal, relatively gentle hand soap acquired in a concentrated powder with a miniscule carbon-cost in shipping weight.
